What is InMode?
InMode (Israel) is an FDA-cleared aesthetic platform that combines bipolar radiofrequency energy with vacuum suction and high-voltage electrical pulses. Korean dermatology clinics most commonly use three handpieces from this platform: InMode FX for the face, Forma for comfortable surface tightening, and Body FX for larger body areas.
Unlike fractional microneedle devices, these three handpieces are completely non-invasive — they do not pierce the skin. Instead, they rely on surface RF heating, vacuum-assisted skin contact, and (in the FX and Body FX) short high-voltage pulses that induce fat cell apoptosis. This makes the InMode FX family suitable for patients who want fat reduction and tightening without any punctures or needle marks.
InMode FX — Face Fat & Tightening
InMode FX uses vacuum suction to pull the skin strongly against the applicator, while simultaneously delivering bipolar RF energy to heat the dermis and subcutaneous fat. After the RF heating cycle, the device fires very short high-voltage electrical pulses (HVP) that create irreversible electroporation in the adipocyte (fat cell) membrane — the fat cells are permanently marked for apoptosis and are gradually cleared by the body over the following weeks.
Because the skin is vigorously suctioned into the handpiece during treatment, mild to moderate bruising is expected along the treatment path. This bruising is a normal part of the mechanism (not a complication) and typically resolves completely within about a week. The combination of fat cell destruction and deep RF tightening delivers both contouring and firming in the same session — a unique feature of the FX handpiece compared with pure tightening devices.

Forma — Comfortable RF Tightening
Forma is a non-invasive bipolar radiofrequency handpiece designed for gentle, uniform heating of the skin. A small applicator glides across the face while continuously delivering RF energy that heats the dermis to a controlled therapeutic range, triggering immediate collagen contraction and stimulating gradual neocollagenesis.
Forma is popular because it is one of the most comfortable tightening treatments available — most patients describe it as a warm, relaxing massage with essentially no pain and no downtime. However, it is important to set expectations: because Forma delivers its energy purely at the surface without deep bulk volumetric heating, its tightening effect is noticeably milder than Thermage, Density, or Oligio — devices that deliver much deeper, higher-energy RF in a single session. Forma is best positioned as a maintenance or early-prevention treatment, not as a standalone replacement for high-powered single-session tightening.

Body FX — Body Contouring
Body FX uses exactly the same three-step mechanism as InMode FX — vacuum suction, bipolar RF heating, and high-voltage pulses that cause permanent fat cell destruction — but with a larger applicator optimized for body areas. It is commonly used on the abdomen, flanks ("love handles"), outer thighs, inner thighs, upper arms, and bra-line fat. As with FX, mild bruising from the vacuum suction is expected and typically resolves within about a week.
The RF heating component also tightens the overlying skin as fat is reduced, which helps prevent the loose-skin look that sometimes follows liposuction or rapid weight loss. This dual action makes Body FX a common choice for patients who want subtle contouring with skin firming — it is not a replacement for liposuction or for treating obesity, but a sculpting tool for localized stubborn fat.
